About Me...

After college I put on 100 pounds and was weighing in at 255 lbs. I had always been athletic and in shape but I stopped playing sports and got a nice cushy desk job and it was all downhill from there. It took me 4 years to realize I was overweight, but once I did, I started my journey to get back in shape and now I'm healthy again and want to help others do the same! Learn More About Me...

Out of My Comfort Zone

yogaSo I started the day off today writing an article about my move to the UK and all the packing and how my body has been suffering both by being exhausted from moving for 3 days and by me eating like crap.  I was having a hard time writing more than a few lines so I stopped for a bit and decided I was going to head to a noontime yoga class at 108 Yoga.

I’m still a yoga newbie and I still don’t know a lot about yoga or the poses or the names of stuff and I always forget about the breathing (which apparently is a key part to yoga) and because of this, the thought of going to a yoga class always makes me very anxious.  When it comes to the gym, I’m the complete opposite. I’m extremely confident, maybe even too confident, but the gym is what I’m use to, it’s what I really enjoy and it’s what I’ve known for the past 4 years, so it’s comfortable to me.  Even when it comes to running, I hate it, I hate it A LOT, but I don’t feel out of my comfort zone doing it.  Yoga on the other hand, really takes me out of my comfort zone.

The main question I keep getting asked by people is “why?” and to that I say “WHY NOT?”!!

Running in Threes

RUNNINGFor the longest time I’ve had a serious love/hate relationship with running.  One week I’ll love it and want to run every day, and the next week I’ll hate it and continue to hate it for a month or more.

For example:  Before I started training for my two beach volleyball tournaments I was in this summer, I really really really hated running!!  Initially it was frustrating and quite painful for me and I think that’s why I hated it so much.  But I sucked it up and kept doing it anyway and eventually I actually started loving running (for a very brief period of time).  I was getting up early and running every day before work and I even ran 5km, twice!  I did this for about a month or so until I burnt myself out with it.  Out of nowhere I stopped enjoying it, I stopped wanting to get up in the morning to do it and eventually I stopped for over a month and had no urge to get back out there and pound the pavement at all.  In that month I actually stopped doing all cardio and I put on 7 lbs (I’m a fat kid at heart who NEEDS his cardio and I need to learn this!).

Last week I asked around for some recipes for some protein pancakes and Krista from Bent Fork Nutrition fired me an email with this recipe.

These are some of my fav high protein pancakes… from the “Eat Clean Diet” cookbook!

Ingredients:
6 egg whites, beaten until fluffy
1/2 cup low-fat cottage cheese (1% MF)
1 scoop protein powder (plain or vanilla)
1/2 cup oatmeal
1/4 cup wheat germ
1/4 cup ground flax
1tsp baking powder
1tbsp canola oil
1/2 tsp cinnamon
cooking spray
optional: 1 cup blueberries or berries of your choice

Directions:

  1. Place all ingredients (except beaten egg whites) in food processor  and blend until mixture is combined.
  2. Pour blended ingredients into a bowl and fold in beaten egg whites.  Fold until just blended. (If using berries, add at this time)
  3. Spray griddle/pan with cooking spray. Ladle pancake mixture onto  griddle and cook until both sides are golden brown.
  4. Top with your favorite healthy ingredients–fruit, nut butters,  maple syrup, yogurt, unsweetened applesauce…..

Makes 6 pancakes

Nutrition Info:

Yoga kicked my ass!!??

108yoga

Wow, I feel like a wuss just writing that in the title, but it’s true!

I’m no yoga guy (I think the correct term may be “Yogi”, like the bear) but I’ve decided that I’m going to use some of the money from my Big Day Downtown to go to some yoga classes at 108 yoga (If you watched my most recent video post, you’ll see I was torn between yoga and beer).  They offer an introductory month of unlimited yoga for $54 (+tax) so that’s what I got.  I’ll talk more about this in my official Big Day Downtown post, so let’s move on to the part about me being a wuss.

Mmmm… Beerfest…

Seaport09285This past weekend I spent Saturday evening at the 4th Annual Halifax Seaport Beerfest with some of my good friends.  175 different beers, great food, great music and great company, it was a lot of fun and I couldn’t have asked for much more!  It’s also where I discovered one of my new favorite beers, Innis & Gunn.  It’s an oak-aged beer and it’s like no other I’ve had before and I highly recommend that everyone tries it.

As much as I love beer, I feel like it’s hindering my training right now.  I’ve been hitting the gym very hard lately but I’ve also been drinking a lot of beer which for me also leads to some pizza and probably more beer and less cardio and less gym time.  My friend Krissy, who writes for the site sometimes, gave me this quote earlier this week, “You can’t have your six pack and drink it too!” which made me start thinking a little bit…

Fab Abs

by Krissy Adams-Schofield, PtD, PTS, BScAHN

fab_absHands down, the most common questions I get involve toning the midsection. Unless you genetically blessed in this area then you too would probably like some advice on how to shed stomach fat and get a flat defined stomach. Whether you are looking to lose some fat on your stomach or six pack abs, here are some tips to combine with your exercise and clean eating plan to help you get the abs you want.

1) You may or may not have heard it before but there is no such thing as spot reduction. The fact is you can do as many crunches and abdominal exercises as you want, you won’t see results unless you reduce your body fat and shed the layer of fat that lies over your abs. The only way to do this is by combining cardio and strength training with a healthy clean eating diet. Have you ever heard the saying “abs are made in the kitchen, not in the gym”? Its ab-solutely true! At least 80% of fat loss is diet related. The remaining 20% is due to exercise and genetics.

My Big Day Downtown Pt 1.

As I mentioned before, I was given $100 a shopping spree by the DHBC and all I have to do in return is document my experience.  I can spend my $100 anyway I want – or anywhere I want in Downtown Halifax.  Downtown Halifax isn’t somewhere I usually shop so I had to do a bit of a recon mission to see where I was going to spend my money and while I did so, I video taped it.

UPDATE:

The reason I put the original video on Vimeo and not my YouTube Channel was because YouTube wouldn’t keep the video up due to one of the songs I had in it (something to do with copyright laws) but I’ve since redone a shorter version of the video and it got up and stayed on YouTube. I think I like the shorter version better, so give it a watch!

ORIGINAL:

The video is 9 minutes long, but honestly, every second is worth it. I had a lot of fun making it and it took a lot of work (40 mins of video and 6 hours of editing) so I hope you do watch it all and that you enjoy it!
